  1. ex vivo is the term used to describe a biological process that is carried out within or on a biological tissue in an artificial environment but with the minimum alteration of natural conditions. Thus, when a study, for instance, is described as ex vivo it means that the study is based on an experimentation or methodology done outside the living organism and extracted from a biological tissue, not from a repository.
  2. Ex vivo, tissue cultures represent a model between in vitro and in vivo (Clift et al., ), where whole tissue slices are cultured, such as organotypical slice cultures (Runden et al., ). In these ex vivo models based on tissue slices, the cytoarchitecture is retained, as well as many of the intercellular connections and interplays.
  3. Ex vivo surgery involves the removal of as many as six abdominal organs from the body so that any cancerous tumors can be excised. The organs are then either reimplanted into the body or replaced by healthy donor organs.
  4. ex vi·vo. (ex vē'vō) That which occurs outside an organism in experimentation, refers to use or positioning of a tissue or cell after removal from an organism while the tissue or cells remain viable. [L. from the living] Medical Dictionary for the Health Professions and Nursing © Farlex
  5. Ex Vivo Models/Isolated Ocular Tissues. Our isolation of ocular tissues from a variety of animal models provides us with yet another method of evaluating the activity and mechanisms of actions of experimental compounds. It allows us to perform drug screening experiments within a controlled environment to better understand the integrative nature of cell behaviors within the complex architecture of intact tissues.
  6. Our Approach to Ex Vivo Induction Studies. Much of our understanding of CYP induction stems from studies conducted in rodents. The design of these studies is generally applicable to other species, although some significant species differences exist, such as: Drug-drug interactions; Pharmacokinetic tolerance; Increased elimination (auto-induction).
  7. By contrast, ex vivo means “outside of a living body.”. In this type of experiment, the living tissues are not created artificially but directly taken from a living organism. The experiment is then immediately conducted in a laboratory environment, with minimal alteration of the organism’s natural conditions.
  8. Targeted genome editing has a great therapeutic potential to treat disorders that require protein replacement therapy. To develop a platform independent of specific patient mutations, therapeutic transgenes can be inserted in a safe and highly transcribed locus to maximize protein expression. Here, we describe an ex vivo editing approach to achieve efficient gene targeting in human.
  9. In cell biology, ex vivo procedures often involve living cells or tissues taken from an organism and cultured in a laboratory apparatus, usually under sterile conditions with no alterations for up to 24 hours. Experiments lasting longer than this using living cells or tissue are typically considered to be in vitro.
